Q. I am still in my home country. How can I prepare for the move to New Zealand?

A. Don’t wait till you arrive to begin asking questions. Contact the local Settlement Support Coordinator to ask questions about the local community, support structures and events.

Q. We speak English and come from an English speaking country?Is Settlement Support useful for us?

A. Yes, Settlement Support as a contact point in your new community is extremely useful to English Speaking migrants. Life in New Zealand will still be very different to what you are used to, even though you speak the language. It is quite normal to find that you’re not sure of where to find information and services, even when you come from a very similar country. There are many things that are different and exploring those differences is part of the adventure of moving to a new country. All questions welcome.

Q. How long will it take before we feel really settled in New Zealand?

A. It can take up to two years before you really feel relaxed and settled. When you arrive you are usually busy organizsng many things and getting used to new employment. Expect it to take time and for things to be very different. Finding differences and having new experiences are all part of the adventure of moving to a new country.

Q. My partner is homesick and wants to go home. Is this normal?

A. While one of you is busy with a new job and meeting new people, it can be easy for the other partner to feel isolated in their new home and community. Contact Settlement Support for information on what events and activities are on locally that they can join. Settlement Support can also help your partner find local employment

Q. Is there a group in the Palmerston North area that I can join for social events? My husband works and I stay home with our children.
