Service Providers & Businesses Employing Migrants
Organisations that employ or provide services for migrants can use Settlement Support as a resource to connect with ethnic groups and meet the settlement needs of newcomers in the local area.
Case Study - Women’s Refuge
Palmerston North Women’s Refuge is an independent community organisation that provides support, advocacy and education for women dealing with family violence. Their free services are available to women from all cultural backgrounds, including migrants and refugees.
When a non-English speaking woman recently came to Women’s Refuge for assistance, the agency urgently needed an interpreter in order to support her in this difficult situation.
Settlement Support was able to quickly connect Women’s Refuge with a trained, highly-skilled interpreter, allowing them to communicate with their client.
“Situations involving family violence can be extremely sensitive,” says Dr Ang Jury, Manager of Palmerston North Women’s Refuge. “When a client doesn’t speak English, finding a professional interpreter who speaks her language is absolutely vital to our service delivery. Settlement Support is a great resource for connecting with trained professional interpreters, allowing us to work effectively with women from diverse cultural backgrounds.”
